“Sense Ability” Data Acquisition Rocket — Fins

Fin Construction

Mick Kelly from Kelly Composites has donated fins to the project. There are to be four fins on the rocket. Three of the fins will be very sturdy and be permanent to the rocket, with one having a strain gage to measure a baseline. The fourth fin will be removable and contain a strain gage.

The reason behind this is that we actually want one of the fins to shred! Having three other hefty fins will keep it stable enough to fly if the test fin shreds. There will be several test fins made from various materials and thicknesses. Each flight will have a different test fin in place with a strain gage. We will record the amount of flutter we see and plot it against the airspeed of the rocket.

Contact us if you would like to make and donate a fin for testing. We will apply the strain gage to the fin.
